The Problem

Three Ways to Charge, Three Very Different Costs

Where you charge changes the price per kWh a lot, and how long you wait.

⚡

Public charger

Slow AC points cost about €0.25–0.35 per kWh and fast DC about €0.45–0.79. You also need to drive there and wait.

🔌

Standard socket

A normal socket delivers about 2.3 kW. A 57 kWh battery takes roughly 25 hours to fill, before losses.

☀️

Home charger + solar

A home EV charger on a solar system can use your own daytime energy, and a battery can carry it to the evening.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A home EV charger on a solar system can use daytime solar energy, and a battery can store surplus for the evening. How much of your charging solar covers depends on your panels, your battery and when the car is plugged in.

It depends on your tariff and the time of day. Recent PVPC figures put off-peak at about €0.08–0.12 per kWh and a typical unoptimised household average at €0.18–0.23. Use the calculator above with your own price.

A standard household socket delivers about 2.3 kW, so a 57 kWh battery takes roughly 25 hours before charging losses. Endesa lists 26–30 hours for a 60 kWh battery. A 7.4 kW home charger takes about 8 hours for the same battery.

No. Solar energy has no fuel cost, but the panels, battery and charger are an investment, and some charging will still come from the grid at night or on cloudy days. The calculator shows energy cost only.

Only if it is connected to the backup circuits. Charging a car is a large load that can drain a home battery quickly, so we decide at the design stage whether the charger goes on the backup board. See our backup power page.
