Air-Conditioning Costs on the Costa del Sol: With and Without Solar
Compare what it costs to run air conditioning in August from the grid, from solar panels, and from solar panels plus a 16 kWh LiFePO4 battery. Use the calculator with your own numbers. Every assumption is shown.

The August Problem
Why Air Conditioning Drives Your Summer Electricity Bill
On the Costa del Sol, air conditioning can be one of the biggest electrical loads in a home in summer. Much of it runs in the evening and at night, when solar panels produce nothing. That is where a battery changes the picture.
☀️
Daytime
Solar panels can cover the air conditioning while the sun is up.
🌙
Evening and night
Without a battery, bedroom cooling comes from the grid at whatever your tariff charges.
🔋
Solar + battery
Surplus daytime solar charges the battery, which then powers the air conditioning at night.

How We Calculate
Assumptions and Sources
Nothing is hidden. These are the figures behind the calculator.
| Input | Value used | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Power of one 3000-frigoría split | 1.3 kW running (4500 frigorías: 2 kW) | Milar, air-conditioning consumption guide |
| Electricity price | €0.20 per kWh by default, editable | PVPC averaged €0.196/kWh before taxes in October 2026 (Selectra). Your tariff may differ |
| Solar production in August | 5.6 kWh per kWp per day | Estimate for Málaga from Solaris solar yield data |
| Battery | 16 kWh usable per battery, charged from surplus solar | KiDi Solar planning assumption |
| Period | 31 days in August, air conditioning at full draw during the hours entered | Conservative planning assumption |
Scenario A: all air-conditioning energy comes from the grid. Scenario B: solar covers the daytime load, the night comes from the grid. Scenario C: surplus solar charges the battery, which supplies as much of the night as its capacity and the surplus allow. Real units cycle down once a room is cool, so actual use is often lower.
Will 16 kWh Last the Night?
The Night-Time Arithmetic
Battery size depends on how many units run and for how long.
10.4 kWh
One split, 8 hours
1.3 kW × 8 h. Fits inside one 16 kWh battery.
20.8 kWh
Two splits, 8 hours
2 × 1.3 kW × 8 h. More than one 16 kWh battery, so you need two batteries or fewer hours at full draw.
Sizing
We check it at the survey
We size the battery and inverter for your real units. See our battery storage and backup calculator.
The same battery that runs your air conditioning at night also keeps your chosen circuits powered in a blackout. Read how a hybrid solar battery backup system works on the Costa del Sol.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, if the battery and hybrid inverter are sized for it. The battery stores solar energy during the day and supplies the air conditioning in the evening and at night. How long it lasts depends on battery capacity and on how many units run.
No. Panels only produce while the sun is up. Without a battery, night-time air conditioning comes from the grid.
As a rough guide, one 3000-frigoría split draws about 1.3 kW, so two units for 8 hours is about 21 kWh at full load. That is more than one 16 kWh battery. Units that cycle down, or fewer hours, need less. We size it properly at the survey.
No. It estimates only the energy cost of air conditioning in August. It leaves out fixed charges, taxes and every other appliance, and it uses the price and solar figures you enter.
With a hybrid inverter that has a backup output, yes. See our backup power page for how part-of-house and whole-house backup work.
