An off-grid solar system works with no connection to the electricity grid: everything the house uses comes from the panels, a battery and, in some cases, a backup generator. On the Costa del Sol it makes most sense for fincas and plots with no grid access.
If your home already has grid access, a hybrid system with battery and backup is usually simpler and cheaper, because it keeps the grid as a safety net. This guide explains when each option fits, what sets the battery size and which paperwork to expect.
Quick answer
Is off-grid worth it? If your home has grid access, usually not: a hybrid with battery and backup gives autonomy with the grid as a safety net. Off-grid fits fincas or plots without a connection, or where connecting is very expensive. For reference, our 16 kWh batteries start at €2,200.

What an off-grid system is and what it needs
Without the grid, the system must cover consumption on its own, day and night.
- Solar panels sized to cover daily consumption and charge the battery.
- A battery (LiFePO4) that stores energy for the night and low-sun days.
- An inverter: off-grid, or hybrid working in off-grid mode.
- An optional backup generator, useful in winter after several cloudy days.
- Load management: scheduling the air conditioning, pool pump or oven for sunny hours.
Off-grid, hybrid with backup, or grid-connected without battery
The best option depends on whether you have grid access and what you want to secure.
| Type | Grid connection | What it covers | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grid-connected, no battery | Yes | Daytime use; shuts down if the grid fails | A home with grid access and high daytime use |
| Hybrid with battery and backup | Yes | Day and night; keeps running in a blackout | Most coastal homes with grid access |
| Off-grid | No | All consumption, with a large battery and sometimes a generator | Fincas or plots with no grid, or with very expensive connection |
What determines the battery size
In an off-grid system, the battery decides whether the house keeps its power.
- Night-time use: what the house consumes when there is no sun.
- Days of autonomy: how many low-production days in a row it must ride through.
- Heavy loads: air conditioning, pool pump, induction hob or EV charger.
- Season: winter brings less sun and more electric heating.

Permits and paperwork
Even without exporting to the grid, the electrical installation must be legal and safe.
An off-grid system does not export energy to the grid, so there is no surplus and no compensation contract. It still needs a correct electrical installation, the technical documentation that applies for its power (a technical memo or a project), the installation certificate and any municipal permits that apply to your plot. We confirm this during the site visit.
To see how surplus is compensated on a grid-connected system, read our surplus compensation guide.
How KiDi Solar helps
We tell you plainly whether off-grid suits you or a hybrid is better.
We visit the home or finca, measure consumption and loads, design the system (panels, battery, inverter and a generator if needed), handle the installation and technical paperwork and explain what to expect in winter. If you have grid access, we will also show you the hybrid-with-backup alternative.
Frequently asked questions about off-grid solar
Can I live on solar panels and a battery alone, with no grid?
Yes, with a battery sized for nights and cloudy days and good management of loads. In winter a backup generator may be needed.
How big a battery do I need?
It depends on your night-time use, the days of autonomy you want and your heavy loads. We calculate it from your real appliance list. For price reference, a 16 kWh battery starts at €2,200.
Can I run air conditioning and a pool pump?
Yes, if the system is sized for it. They are the heaviest loads, so it is best to schedule them for sunny hours.
Do I need permits?
Yes. The electrical installation must be legal and safe, with the technical documentation and municipal permits that apply. Because it does not export to the grid, there is no surplus compensation. We confirm this during the site visit.
Is off-grid or hybrid with backup the better choice?
If you already have grid access, a hybrid is usually simpler and cheaper because it keeps the grid as a safety net. Off-grid makes sense with no grid, or where connecting is very expensive.
Check whether off-grid or a hybrid suits your finca
Tell us about your home or finca and how much you use, and we will tell you which option fits.
- The location and whether there is a grid connection
- A list of appliances or a recent bill
- Whether there is air conditioning, a pool or an EV
- Photos of the roof or the available land
With this, KiDi Solar can determine:
- whether off-grid is realistic for your case
- the panel and battery size
- whether you need a backup generator
- the paperwork and timeline
