Solar Pool Heating Cost Comparison: Heat Your Pool for Less
Compare what it costs to heat your pool to 26°C in March with an electric heater, a heat pump on the grid, and a heat pump powered by your own solar panels and battery. Use the calculator with your own pool. Every assumption is shown.

The Options
Three Ways to Heat a Pool, Three Different Bills
A pool heated to 26°C in March needs a lot of energy. How you supply it decides what it costs.
🔥
Electric resistance heater
Gives 1 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity. Simple, but the most expensive way to run.
♨️
Heat pump
Typically 3 to 7 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity (US Department of Energy). The same heat for a fraction of the power.
☀️
Heat pump + solar and battery
Your own panels power the heat pump, and a battery carries solar energy into the evening. This is what we design.

Energy cost of heating the pool for the month of March: warming the water from the start temperature to the target, plus keeping it there against heat loss. It is a planning estimate. It leaves out pump and filtration power, fixed charges and taxes. Heat pump efficiency falls when the air is cold, so use a lower COP for a cautious result. Solar energy has no fuel cost, but the panels, battery and heat pump are an investment.

How We Calculate
Assumptions and Sources
Nothing is hidden. These are the figures behind the calculator.
| Input | Value used | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Heat to warm the water | 1.163 kWh per m³ per °C | Physical property of water (4.186 kJ per kg per °C) |
| Heat loss from the surface | 0.89 kWh per m² per day uncovered, 0.54 covered (about 39% lower) | Published measurement of a small outdoor pool, example. Real loss depends on wind, humidity and sun |
| Water temperature in March | 15°C by default, editable | Málaga sea temperature in March about 15.7°C (Sea Temperatures) |
| Heat pump efficiency (COP) | 5 by default, editable (typical 3 to 7). Electric heater COP 1 | US Department of Energy |
| Electricity price | €0.20 per kWh by default, editable | Typical household range in Electromovilidad24, 2026 |
| Pool depth and period | 1.5 m average depth, 31 days in March | Planning assumptions, editable |
| Share from your own solar | 70% by default, you set it | KiDi Solar planning assumption. It depends on panel size, battery and when the heat pump runs |
Heat needed = (volume × temperature rise × 1.163) + (surface area × daily loss × 31 days). Scenario A divides nothing: all heat is electricity. Scenario B divides by the heat pump COP. Scenario C divides by the COP and removes the share supplied by your own solar.
Why Solar + Heat Pump
Heat on Demand, Powered by Your Own Sun
On demand
Heat when you decide
Solar thermal collectors heat water only while the sun shines and cannot heat on demand. A heat pump on solar power can run when you need it.
Battery
Evening and cloudy days
A LiFePO4 battery stores surplus daytime solar energy so the heat pump is not tied to the middle of the day. See our battery storage page.
One system
Pool and home together
The same solar system powers your home, charges an electric car and can run air conditioning.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Photovoltaic panels can power a pool heat pump. With a battery, solar energy collected during the day can also run the heat pump in the evening. How much of the cost it removes depends on your panels, your battery and your pool.
Yes. An electric resistance heater gives 1 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity. A pool heat pump typically gives 3 to 7 kWh of heat per kWh (US Department of Energy), so the same heat costs a fraction of the electricity.
Use the calculator above. With the default assumptions the calculator shows the cost of an electric heater, a heat pump on the grid and a heat pump with your own solar. Your result depends on your electricity price, water temperature and whether you use a cover.
Thermal collectors heat water only while the sun shines, and they cannot heat on demand. A heat pump on solar panels and a battery can run when you decide, including on cloudy days and in the evening.
Yes. A cover reduces heat loss from the water surface. One published measurement shows about 39% lower daily loss with a cover (example). Tick the cover option in the calculator to see the effect.
